Spirituality Has Nothing to Do with Religion

Spirituality is something which people believe it has to with religion of some kind, when religion has nothing to do with it. Being spiritual has to do with understanding that we are not human beings but a spirit in a human body; we are just visiting this planet in this body computer or human space suit. Understanding that there is a much higher power than us is being spiritual. Most of us believe our ego is what we are truly, when in fact there is a deeper essence that we need as humans to understand and learn how to harness our true inner light. One of my favorite spiritual writers is Dr. Wayne Dyer, who recently past, has been one of my staples in my life. He and his philosophies have helped me through some of the darkest times in my life. He incorporates some of the texts of the New and Old Testament, The Tao Te Ching, philosophies of the great Deepak Chopra, and many others. By understanding different writings and philosophies it is easier to discover your own way and your own spirituality without being caught up in the dogmatic handcuffs of some religions.

I was raised a Roman Catholic in my Italian household. I was baptized at birth, received penance, received my 1st holy communion and completed my confirmation throughout my life. I am not a regularly attending Catholic but, I do attend church every so often with my wife and children. I believe we need to instill some kind of moral compass that is based on a solid foundation of ideology to our children; in order to have them eventually make their own decisions in their life. If we believe that there is not a higher power, than that means man is his own god and he makes up his own laws to follow and we can see some of those effects in today’s society. I understand that I do not need attend a church in order to celebrate God or to speak to him on a daily basis. We do not need a Priest, Minister, Rabbi or Imam to ask God for his forgiveness or a third party to speak to him. God is within us all whether you believe in him or not, getting in touch with ourselves is how we connect with our inner light.

At the age of 20 years old, I lost my father to a sudden illness which launched me into a 10 year destruction of my life. As much as I had good things in my life, I chose to slowly kill myself and move away from God. I lost my faith and spirituality because God took a great man away from this earth. My father, Frank Panicucci, was a Vietnam Veteran that lost his arm in the war; because of his handicap he lost his dream of being a mechanical engineer. I thought he paid his dues by losing his arm but apparently God needed him there and I couldn’t wrap my head around that, so I stopped believing in God. I was in a dark place for 10 years of my life until I had a vicious wakeup call and was forced to change my direction. My mother was the rock in my life that led me to read spiritual books from Dr. Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay and Deepak Chopra and to start using daily affirmations in my daily routine. It was her guidance that directed me back to connecting with my true self and God. Without her I would not have been able to accomplish many of the things I have done over the past 17 years. It is my experience that spirituality is one of the greatest tools we have in order live a longer and happier life.

Meditation is a method used in order to connect with our true self and God. Many of us have heard of the third eye, it is located in our brain. This is known as the pineal gland. It is said in ancient cultures that this is how we connect to our source or God by meditating and quieting the mind by closing the eyes and using deep diaphragmatic breathing. Dr. Wayne Dyer has guided meditations that I have used to help me focus and keep my mind from wandering while meditating. I have personally used this method to meditate and have had amazing results. This is a link if you are interested in learning techniques on how to meditate http://www.drwaynedyer.com/video/guided-meditation-wayne-dyer-living-the-mystery/. Start with just a few minutes every day and slowly increase your time until you can reach up to 15 or 20 minutes. I guarantee you will see results in yourself and your outlook in life. Good luck and God bless you all.
